Nutan Minz (28) can well be called the P.T. Usha of Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP).
She emerged the fastest woman in JAP, sprinting 100m in 13.58 seconds on Sunday at its eighth annual sports meet that kicked off at the mega sports complex in Hotwar, Ranchi.
Close on her heels were Sangeeta Horo and Hem Rani Kujur, who clocked 14.03 seconds and 14.56 seconds, respectively.
The event was held in the presence of chief guest, additional director-general (provision) B.B. Pradhan.
The results of the 800m final for women and 10,000m final for men were also declared on Sunday.
In the first, Anita Kacchap clocked 2.50.09 minutes to race ahead of competitors Nisha Kumari and Sushma Gari, with timings of 2.58.63 minutes and 3.00.54 minutes, respectively.
Meet in-charge and JAP deputy superintendent of police Emalda Ekka told The Telegraph that all the girls were from the 10th Battalion.
In the 10,000m men’s final event, Chandradhar Mahto of JAP-2 came first with a timing of 34.52.72 minutes, ahead of Eshak Murmu and Sanjay Oraon, who covered the same distance clocking 35.33.83 minutes and 39.29.82 minutes, respectively.
Nutan, the daughter of retired constable Junaj Minz, however, played down her triumph on the tracks.
“Though I am glad I won, this is not my career’s best performance. My best timing is 13.05 seconds, which I had clocked at a regional police meet organised last year in Sahebganj,” said the policewoman who lost her mother at the age of 13 in 1996.
Nutan completed her matriculation from St Anna Girls’ High School in Khunti in 1999 and intermediate from Marwari Women’s College in 2001. But family problems compelled her to stop her education after BA Part I.
A keen mountaineer in college, adventure-loving Nutan also got opportunity to jump from 17,000ft as an NCC cadet.
She got the NCC “C” certificate with an A grade and was selected as constable with the Jharkhand state police in 2004.
“I know that I can do much better if I get proper coaching. I am a part of the IG team whose work is only to play and participate at the all-India police meets. But, there is no one in the state to give us proper training that can help us improve our timing. If I get an NIS-certified coach, I can better my best,” said a confident Nutan.
The JAP sports meet will conclude on September 2.
