Ranchi, Dec. 3: The capital is likely to witnesses a series of demonstrations tomorrow as political and social organisations take to the roads over the issue of temples’ security or communal harmony, according to their ideologies.

While the BJP has called for a bandh tomorrow to protest against the destruction of four idols at a temple, the JVM has decided on a peace march to combat “the communalism” of the issue.

The bandh call comes after idols in a 150-year temple in Chutia were found broken yesterday.

The BJP seems to have planned well to ensure that the bandh is a success. Naming the activists who have been delegated to ensure that the bandh is observed across the city, party district president Sanjay Seth said: “Leaders from several localities will come out to the road to enforce the bandh.”

The JVM will take out the peace march from Piska More at 11.30 am. Party functionary Uday Shanker Ojha said that though he condemned the destruction in the temple, he would not allow anyone to disturb the peace in the city over this issue.

The Socialist Unity Centre of India and the CPI(ML) are also likely to take similar stands. Those in support of the bandh include the Jharkhand Sarna Hindu Raksha Manch, the RSS, the VHP, the Bajrang Dal and the Garm Vikas Mahila Samiti of Chutia.

“How can you expect harmony in society after idols are destroyed?” asked the president of Gram Vikas Mahila Samiti, Amravati Devi.

The residents of Chutia have gone beyond protests. Today they constituted a 25-member body, the Mandir Suraksha Samiti, to ensure security in temples in their area. They also performed havan at the temple where the idols were found broken.

The police are also getting ready to face the bandh.

Senior police superintendent Naresh Prasad Singh said: “Our policemen will keep vigil from dawn. Proper security will be provided at sensitive areas and troublemakers will be dealt with strictly. We are also trying to nab the culprit responsible for breaking the idols in the temple.”

Meanwhile, the police claimed to have identified those behind the desecration of idols. However, no one has been arrested.

Most schools in Ranchi have decided to keep the institutions closed tomorrow. Others are yet to decide.
