Move over Chetan Bhagat, Anna Hazare is the real best-seller at the capital’s ongoing 10-day National Book Fair at Jaipal Singh stadium.
Titles based on the anti-graft champion such as Krantidut Anna Hazare, Swarajya, Power to the People, Loknayak Anna Hazare and Anna Hazare against Corruption have been the must-picks for the weekend crowd.
“By late evening we are expecting all Anna’s books to be sold. Visitors are demanding copies of Krantidut Anna Hazare,” fair organiser Chandra Bhushan said, adding they would stock the books priced at Rs 95 each. Publishers are also giving a 10 per cent discount on each copy.
“Let’s first see the book on Anna Hazare. We must read it,” said government employee Mahesh Kumar, who was seen rushing to one of the four kiosks stocking up books on the Lokpal Bill crusader.
Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal’s Swarajya and its English version Power to the People are also moving fast. These cost Rs 20 each.
“Swarajya is our birthright,” said college-goer Neelam Kumari quoting Kejriwal. “The Lokpal Bill has great implications for all citizens of India. Let us have the power to progress,” she said.
“Anna has not only raised his voice against corruption but also mobilised the entire nation to support his crusade. We are all victims of corruption, which is why Anna has touched a chord. This book divulges how Anna has devoted his life against corruption, which other leaders have avoided,” said a homemaker, Neena Devi.
There were 200 copies of Kejriwal’s book in Hindi and 60 in English.
“We have sold 55 copies so far. More sales are expected by late evening,” said kiosk owner Sunita.
Loknayak Anna Hazare and Anna Hazare against Corruption, at Rs 100 each, are also selling well.
“We have sold seven out of 20 copies. It seems that people here are visiting the fair only to grab one book or another about Annaji and his crusade,” said kiosk owner Vijay Kumar.
Besides the Anna fervour, other picks at the national fair jointly hosted by Samay India and Pustak Mela Samiti, New Delhi, were Chetan Bhagat’s Revolution 2020, Chanakya’s Niti Sutra at Rs 150, Premchand’s collection of 75 stories titled Mansarovar at Rs 120, Meghdoot by Kalidas at Rs 80 and Satyajit Ray’s The Complete Adventures of Feluda at Rs 450.
Those with a yen for music found the fair a veritable treasure-trove of ghazals by late Jagjit Singh.
Self-help books such as You Can Win by Shiv Khera and educational CDs of math, physics and chemistry also found buyers.
This fair with around 100 stalls will continue till November 13. Its entry fee is Rs 5 per head.
