Jamshedpur: As a teen, she had written on a piece of paper that she would make it to London School of Economics (LSE) one day. She even stuck the piece of paper on her mirror and would look at it often.
Now, 21-year-old Yasha Spriha's teen dream is mirroring reality. Yasha, a 2014 alumna of Sacred Heart Convent School, has bagged an LSE berth through the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan this year.
The girl with an English honours degree from Lady Shri Ram College, University of Delhi, in 2017 has now received a full scholarship to pursue her masters in human resources and employee relations at LSE. The scholarship covers her tuition fees worth 23,000 pounds, a monthly stipend of 130 pounds as well as thesis grant, visa and travel allowance.
"LSE was always my dream. I kept looking at that piece of paper on my mirror. I believe if you want something with all your heart, it does happen. I am extremely happy," Yasha, who will leave for London in September for her yearlong masters course, said from her Adityapur home.
Passionate about people and cultures, she said, "After my masters, I will aim for a career in the development sector or the UN or Unesco because frankly people are my passion."
Her mother Mudita Chandra, who's the principal of Abdul Bari Memorial College in Golmuri, said Yasha was not a topper in school though she passed her ICSE with 92.4 per cent and ISC with 92 per cent. "She was a bright kid, but some of her classmates did score more than her. But her involvement in extra-curricular activities, especially debating, gave her an edge. She thinks and has opinions. I think that's why she made it to both LSR (lady Shri Ram) and now LSE," Chandra said.
Yasha applied for Commonwealth scholarship through the Union ministry of human resource development website in December last year followed by a separate application submission to Commonwealth Commission and interviews and submission of her development plan on access inclusion and opportunity.
With her literature background, why did she opt for a masters' course in an economics related subject? "I guess I am a people's person and am fascinated by the concept of people management," Yasha said, adding that involves some economics. "I was the secretary of my college students' union and handled international events on campus. After my graduation, I worked for a year at DE Shaw in Hyderabad where I handled talent acquisition, which is again aligned with handling people. So yes, this is my call."
This won't be her first time on a campus abroad. In 2016, Yasha had gone on a three-week trip to the University of Kansas, US, under a leadership exchange programme.
