Jamshedpur, July 14: Three damaged valves of a 50-year-old man’s heart were put in order — two replaced artificially and one repaired — at Brahmananda Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital in Tamolia on the outskirts of the city, making it Jharkhand’s first such cardiac surgery.

Though the redo open heart surgery on Ravinder Singh, manager of a private firm in Mango, took place on July 4, the hospital purposely kept it low-key as it wanted to ensure the patient was recuperating. Singh was released on July 12 and the hospital made the announcement only after his family said he was doing well.

A hi-tech medical team led by senior cardiac surgeon Perwaiz Alam and cardiac anaesthesiologist Vikash Toshniwal fought for seven hours to give the man with a long history of heart ailments a new life.

Sidhgora resident Ravinder Singh underwent open-heart surgery at Christian Medical College, Vellore, 15 years ago. But problems resurfaced in 2009 and since the past six months, he was bed-ridden.

At the hospital, he was diagnosed with triple heart valve disease. As valves control the flow of blood during contractions of the heart, their malfunctioning hits vital organs hard. Singh’s legs were swollen, and his kidney, liver and lungs were affected. “Two of his valves were replaced artificially and one was repaired. On the fourth day, Singh started walking,” Alam said.

“My dad is already thinking of work. It’s a miracle,” said Singh’s son Harpreet.
