Ranchi, Feb.6: Police recovered 40 bags of ammonium nitrate, each weighing 100kg, from two places today.
While 35 bags were recovered from the godown of Jashpur Transport in Jalan Road under Kotwali police station area of the capital, five bags were recovered from the residence of a food grain dealer at Pankheta in Ramgarh district.
Officer-in-charge of Kotwali police station Arwind Kumar Choudhary confirmed the recovery in his area and said one Sunil Kumar Gupta was arrested in this connection.
Police superintendent of Ramgarh district Mrityunjay Kumar also confirmed the recovery and said investigation had started to ascertain whether the chemical was kept for use as fertilizer or a component of high power explosives.
“Ammonium nitrate or urea has two uses. It can be used as fertiliser as well as used as an explosive making component. We have seized the chemical and are now trying to find out why it was kept,” he said.
Sources in the district, however, said Jain, from whose house the chemical was recovered, was arrested for keeping explosives along with his brother Shyam Sundar Jain four years ago. “Why would Jain, a PDS dealer, keep this chemical in his house?” a source asked.
Bomb experts of Jharkhand Jaguar, said the quantity of chemicals recovered could produce more than 400 bombs.
