New Delhi, Aug. 21: The Centre has ordered blocking of over 300 websites after morphed images of alleged atrocities against minorities in Assam sparked threats against people from the Northeast and their exodus from various states.
Till yesterday, the information technology ministry had blocked 207 websites and shortlisted 38 more. Most of these websites, however, had content criticising the killing of Rohingyas in Myanmar and were not related to the ethnic clashes in Assam.
Of one batch of 47 objectionable websites, only two were connected to the Assam clashes. But the Centre has little option but to block these sites as they are stirring communal tension. Home ministry sources said Facebook and Google were working to remove “inflammatory and hateful” content on their sites. But there were problems with blocking some pages on Twitter.
