New Delhi, May 13: The UPSC today said a civil service aspirant whose family alleged that a mix-up in roll number prompted him to commit suicide had never appeared for the main exam and the interview.

The Union Public Service Commission rejected media reports blaming it for the death of Y.V. Manjunath on Friday.

Manjunath’s family had claimed that he had committed suicide because of a “goof-up” by the commission.

The family said he was allotted roll number 538745 and had cleared all rounds of the exam. But when the results were announced on May 3, the name of B. Ashwin was indicated against the roll number.

“The commission expressed sorrow and grief over this incident. But after verification of our records, we found that Manjunath did not qualify in the preliminary examination. The roll number being cited to be Manjunath’s was actually allotted to B. Ashwin,” Rakesh Kumar Gupta, additional secretary in the UPSC, said.

He said Manjunath had applied for the civil services examination last year, was allotted roll number 538950, and that he did not qualify in the preliminary test.

“It is also confirmed from our records that no candidate with the roll number 538950 or with the name Manjunath Y.V. appeared for the civil service main examination or the interview,” Gupta said.

He said Manjunath’s e-admit card showing his roll number as 538745 for the main exam was doctored.

The commission had on May 7 received a fax from G.S. Pradeep Kumar, who claimed to be Manjunath’s friend, saying the results wrongly indicated Ashwin’s name against Manjunath’s roll number on the list of successful candidates.
