Calcutta, Nov 23 :
Promising star of Bengali TV serials and stage actress Chandra Mukherjee allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from her bedroom ceiling fan at her house in Bangur Avenue on Tuesday morning.
The 34-year old actress, who has starred in a number of popular TV serials including Janmabhoomi, Kunjavilla and Janani, lived in the Bangur Avenue flat with her husband, six-year-old daughter and mother -in-law.
According to the Lake Town police station, Chandra committed suicide at around 10.30 on Tuesday morning. She did not leave behind any note. For the moment, the police have ruled out the murder angle. ?There is nothing to suggest this and it seems a genuine case of suicide,? said inspector-in-charge of Lake Town police station, Ashok Singhroy. The body has been sent for post mortem.
According to Chandra?s sister-in-law Susmita Basu, who occasionally spends time in Bangur Avenue, everything had seemed normal in the morning. ?Around 9 in the morning, Chandra received a call from the producers of Kunjavilla who wanted to fix some shooting dates,? said Susmita. ?She said that she would let them know a while later.?
According to Susmita, her sister-in-law then went into the bedroom and locked herself in.
Her husband, Susovan Mukherjee, an officer at UCO bank, was in the toilet opposite the bedroom at that time. On emerging from the bathroom, he waited for some time for his wife to open the door. However, when Chandra did not open the door despite persistent knocking for almost 40 minutes, Susovan, along with a domestic help, broke the door down. They found Chandra hanging. According to the report filed with the police, she was still alive when she was brought down and rushed to a local nursing home. The nursing home referred the case to the R.G. Kar Hospital, where she was declared ?brought dead?.
A complaint lodged with the Lake Town police on Tuesday by Chandra?s mother, Sandhya Chakraborty, provides a pointer to the possible cause of suicide.
In the complaint of abetment to suicide, Chakraborty says that ?mental torture? by her husband had driven her to suicide. She mentioned that her marriage of 10 years was punctuated with very ?tormenting periods? which Chandra could not recover from. She also urged the police to probe if Chandra was murdered.
Susovan Mukherjee, however, was not available for comment. His sister said that he was ?too distraught? after the incident to talk to anyone at the moment. But Susmita said that the two were ?happily married? and she was not aware of any tension.
Chandra?s cousin, Ashok Mukherjee, who was also present at the police station, said Chandra had called up her mother to tell her she was fed up with her marriage and was extremely unhappy. ?I cannot tolerate this any more,? she reportedly told her mother.
Singhroy said since the charge of abetment to suicide was a ?very serious one?, the police may be compelled to take action against her husband. ?Let the investigation first proceed,? he said.
The death, coming as it does on the heels of the suicides of dancer Ranjabati Sircar and lyricist Pulak Bandopadhyay, has stunned showbiz. Mamata Shankar, who was her co-star in Janmabhoomi, described Chandra as a ?very happy and lively person?. ?I did not know she was suffering from such depression even though I interacted with her so often and for so long,? said Mamata.
Dwijen Banerjee, who has also acted with her on a number of occasions said: ?How could a bright and charming friend like Chandra take such an extreme step of killing herself?? Banerjee recalled having met her barely five days ago. He recalled that Chandra had begun her career as an actress with the drama group Theatre Workshop. One of the recent productions in which Chandra was acting is Pran Tapashya.
Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee, her leading man in the play, visited her mother at the home in Dum Dum Park.
