The Santacruz observatory of the India Meteorological Department registered 331.4mm of rain in Mumbai on Tuesday, the heaviest since the July 26, 2005, record of 944mm.
No substantial rainfall was reported from any part of the city or its outskirts on Wednesday. However, the respite may prove transient, with the weatherman forecasting "heavy to very heavy rainfall" in parts of Maharashtra over the next 24 hours.
At least 10 people were reported dead due to drowning and wall collapse in Mumbai and its suburbs.
The suburban railway system, which caters to over 60 lakh people a day, began crawling back to life on Wednesday but operations have not been fully restored.
Train services on the Mumbai-Howrah route also remained affected.
Air services continued to be disrupted, with several flights cancelled or delayed.
