Bangalore, Aug. 24: A popular Kannada actress who is in charge of the Congress party's digital and social media cell has been subjected to severe trolling by fans of Narendra Modi after she criticised the Prime Minister.

Divya Spandana, 34 - better known by her stage name Ramya -is the latest high-profile victim of trolls, some of whom were downright obscene and sexist in their comments. A former Lok Sabha MP from her native Mandya, near Bangalore, Ramya was in May this year put in charge of the AICC's social media and digital communications wing.

What triggered the tirade was her offer of Rs 25,000 to anyone producing a picture of Modi with flood victims. "Ok guys, I'll give you 25,000 rupees if you find me a picture of Modi with flood affected victims in Assam, Gujarat or Bihar. No photoshop," Ramya had tweeted on Tuesday.

The post went along with another which pointed to the Prime Minister's total absence from flood-affected areas. "Can't find a single image of PrimeMinister Modi with flood affected victims in Assam, Gujarat or Bihar. Too scared to get lynched you think?" Ramya tweeted, taking a dig over instances of beef-linked lynchings in some states.

Modi fans were quick to hit back. Rupa Murthy, who goes by the Twitter handle @ProudBhagavathi, responded with news clippings about Modi "taking stock" of the flood situation. "Bimbo, don't exhibit your stupidity! This is what a PM is supposed to do and he is doing it...photo ops with victims is UR forte."

Some, like Senthil Kumar who tweets with the handle @sen_sindh, were downright sexist. "We all know you are a shameless woman. People like you are reflect the worthiness of Congress party."

A few others, like Srikanth Krishna, replied with a collage of Ramya's film stills from a beachside sequence. "I could only find this! Ramya with flood affected victim. No fotoshop. Real pic."

But Ramya seemed unflappable. "I am made of sterner stuff. First of all, they could be paid influencers of BJP who use fake handles," she told The Telegraph.

While it is the trolls' job to try and silence critics, Ramya said she was determined to do what she had been doing as a citizen. "They play mind games with abuses and threats to suppress people from speaking the truth. But I am determined to go on doing what I do."

Ramya also drew several tweets lauding her for taking on the Prime Minister. Karnataka Congress working president Dinesh Gundu Rao expressed support. "Well said @divyaspandana. Personal vindictive targeting is what the #Bhakts excel at," Rao tweeted.

The outspoken Ramya was trolled heavily exactly a year ago when she commented that "Pakistan is not hell" after defence minister Manohar Parikkar's remark that "Pakistan is hell".

She had objected to Parikkar's view as she had just returned from Pakistan after attending a conference of young parliamentarians from Saarc nations, a visit she said had helped her get to know the country and its people better. A Karnataka lawyer had filed a sedition case claiming Ramya had insulted India by appreciating Pakistan. The case was dismissed a few months ago.
