Bhubaneswar, Jan. 30: Those bitten by the acting bug can now hope to hone their skills and get proper training at a city-based institute called Actors’ Studio.

The film-acting institute is billed as the one-of-its-kind school in the city to provide practical training in the art and craft of on-camera acting. Earlier, there were only government and private institutes to train in theatre acting in Bhubaneswar.

Odia and television industry can expect to be flooded with quality thespians with the institute aiming to usher in a change.

“To be successful in this highly competitive field, knowledge of techniques specific to on-camera acting is essential for today’s actors,” said Bharadwaj Panda, an ad-filmmaker, who will be teaching acting to the students.

The acting programme at Actors’ Studio is custom designed to serve that purpose through a praxis-centred curriculum that integrates theory, analysis and practice in the classroom.

The programme uses a variety of techniques ranging from behaviour-based methods to technology-oriented exercises designed to calibrate performance for camera.

The course modules take into account the works of eminent theatre and film personalities who have shaped contemporary theatre and cinema in Odisha in all its forms and expressions. Film director Subhas Das will be teaching acting, while artiste Veejayant Dash will teach art direction.

The first batch that consists about 10 students starts training from first week of February. Students will be taught in on-camera acting, body conditioning through yoga and meditation, voice and movement, dance and stunt practice, film appreciation, scene study, improvisation and monologue, acting theory and exposure to actual shooting set experience, as well as the business of acting.

“We are here to learn the basics as those who have the right base can build mammoth foundations on it,” said Anuj Kumar Shukla, a 22-year-old commerce student, who has enrolled himself. Each student will get a short-film highlighting his acting skills to serve as a portfolio. The institute offers five-months film-acting course twice a year with six days a week work schedule.

Any person with an interest in acting may join the course. The minimum eligibility is 18 years or above and the minimum education qualification required is higher secondary. A leading event management company has set up the institute located at Niladri Vihar in the city.
