Hooghly, April 6 :    Hooghly, April 6:  Rival groups clashed again this morning at Telenipara in Hooghly with bomb, pushing up the political temperature that soared after a BJP leader was arrested for yesterday's clashes. One person had died of splinter and bullet wounds in the area and several were injured after police opened fire yesterday to disperse groups that fought a pitched battle over a tap-water feud. A police contingent reached Segurbagan in Telenipara immediately after the renewed trouble and nabbed 20 people, taking the total number of the arrests to 70. Another police party went to nearby Tantipara to look for Lalbabu Sau, a local BJP leader who was wanted in connection with yesterday's clashes. A large number of women, including Sau's mother, demonstrated in front of Bhadreswar police station after his arrest, demanding his immediate release. The police, however, refused to release the BJP leader and persuaded the women to disperse. Most people in the locality preferred to remain indoors. There was a palpable sense of panic in the area. Yesterday, 35-year-old Rajkumar Chowdhury had been killed. Twelve shops were also burned down. So far, 22 families have abandoned their houses in Telenipara and Gondalpara as a large police team led by inspector-general of police (western range) Jitram Bhagat searched the area for rioters. District superintendent of police N. Ramesh Babu said the state armed police, Eastern Frontier Rifles jawans and Rapid Action Force personnel were camping in the area. Trinamul Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee has directed party MP from Serampore Akbar Ali Khondekar to keep a close watch on the situation and spare no effort to maintain peace and order. Pankaj Banerjee, leader of Opposition in the Assembly, said he had sought a report from local party workers on the eruption of violence. The state BJP reacted predictably to the arrest of its district leader. Muzaffar Khan, Bengal BJP vice-president, said the police were trying to cover up their failure to tackle the law and order problems by arresting Sau. 'Our party was aware of the local problems and had submitted a memorandum to the local police station after Muharram. However, the police failed to deal with the situation as tension mounted in the area yesterday. Instead of trying to bring the situation under control, the police resorted to unprovoked lathicharge and firing,' he alleged.
