Calcutta, June 13 :     Sports and transport minister Subhas Chakraborty is raring to take a walk in the clouds. The CPM pro-changer is reaching for the skies - quite literally - in a bid to alter the cityscape. Chakraborty claims to be preparing the ground for 'the tallest building in Asia' in Calcutta. The minister's dream project will comprise 100 floors, with 10 of them underground. The edifice will be in the form of a miniature town. The announcement caused a stir at the inauguration ceremony of the Anupama commercial complex of Bengal Peerless Housing Development Company at Mandalghanthi, in Rajarhat, on Monday. 'When I visited Kuala Lumpur, I saw a building with 81 floors and thought, why can't we have such a building?' said the minister. 'The site for the building has almost been finalised. But I can't disclose any other details now,' added Chakraborty. But he did mention that the building of his dreams would have a five-star hotel, a market complex and other trappings needed to turn it into a model township. 'I am thinking of two developers for the mega project... if Peerless builds the complex then it might well be known as Peerless Tower,' smiled Chakraborty. Taken completely by surprise, S.K. Roy, managing director of The Peerless General Finance and Investment Company Limited, said: 'I am not aware of this project. I have just come to know about it from the minister. But we will be proud to be associated with such a path-breaking project.' But can Chakraborty's 100-floor fantasy be turned into fact? Tapas Ghatak, geo-scientist with the CMDA, struck a note of caution: 'The tallest building in the city, Chatterjee International Centre on Chowringhee Road, is just 23 floors. A thorough geotechnical investigation will have to be carried out before a 100-floor structure is planned.' The study, according to Ghatak, would primarily take into account the soil's 'load-bearing capacity', practically ruling out the heart of the city, where 'the aquifer level is very high'. 'What will also be of vital importance is the technique of construction, which must be suited to the nature of the soil,' added the geo-scientist. While inaugurating the Peerless housing complex, Subhas Chakraborty went into real-estate overdrive. 'It is said that I am a friend of promoters. What is the wrong in that? Everyday you will find men and women with hammer, chisel and other tools, looking for work. Neither the state nor the Central government thinks about these daily labourers, numbering about 3 to 5 lakh, who earn their livelihood thanks to the promoters we love to hate.'
