Ahmedabad, June 2 (PTI): Gujarat High Court today posted for tomorrow the hearing on the bail application of Surendra Shetty, actress Shilpa Shetty’s father.

Surendra faces charges in a case of alleged extortion filed against him and two others by Surat police.

Surendra, whose anticipatory bail petition was rejected by a local court in Surat on May 30, had moved high court, which fixed the hearing for tomorrow.

Surendra’s advocate S.V. Raju filed the bail application and Justice A.H. Mehta fixed June 3 as the date for the hearing.

The Surat court had refused Surendra anticipatory bail, holding that there was prima facie evidence of his involvement in the alleged crime.

The court had also turned down Surendra’s plea for a 15-day stay on its order to enable the accused to file an appeal in the high court.

Shilpa’s parents — Surendra and Sunanda — are alleged to have hired a gangster to extort Rs 2 crore from Panjak Agarwal, the owner of Prafful Sarees, which they claimed was due to Shilpa for an advertising campaign done in 1997.

Police also claimed to have recorded telephonic talks between a gangster and the victim, Agarwal, as well as between Shilpa’s parents and Agarwal, which revealed the extortion threats. Surendra has denied the allegation, saying the conversation was fabricated.
