New Delhi, Nov. 2 :
The slanging match between the Sangh parivar and the church hotted up today with the latter alleging that the attack on missionaries is aimed ?to block the process of empowerment of Dalits and tribals? and the VHP accusing the church of ?doing business? in the name of service.
Even as the church and the Sangh parivar continued to vitiate the atmosphere on the eve of Pope John Paul II?s visit, the police in a pre-emptive move arrested some top Shiv Sena leaders, including its Delhi unit chief Jai Bhagwan Goyal. Sena activists plan massive protests during the papal visit.
Sena sources said they were awaiting word from their chief Bal Thackeray for further action. Some senior leaders are convening an emergency meeting tonight to draw up their strategy. The ?preventive? detentions may continue till the Pope leaves India.
Unmindful of the volley of protests from the staunch Hindu nationalists, the church said the protests were due to a mindset ?because they (the Sangh parivar) do not want development of the Dalits and tribals?.
?It is in their vested interest to maintain inequality in society, so that the tribals and the Dalits remain as slaves. The Holy Father (Pope) is liberator of the oppressed. The Pope himself has undergone torture under the communist rule in Poland,? said S. Lourduswamy, executive secretary of Catholic Bishops Conference of India for SC/ST/BC.
Talking to reporters, he said the Dalits and tribals, the indigenous people of India, were enslaved by the invading Aryans. The Holy Scriptures justified this socio-cultural system and the Mughals and the British maintained it, he added.
In a counter attack, VHP general secretary Acharya Giriraj Kishore said: ?Even the clergy an-d laymen feel that the majority of the Catholic educational institutions have become commercial.?
?All their claims of social service are a sham. Christian publications have clearly stated that even poor Catholics are not admitted to these money-making missions,? he charged.
Rajya Sabha member and former Union minister Eduardo Faleiro today demanded an immediate ban on outfits sponsoring the Goa-Delhi yatra during the Pope?s visit here. He accused the Centre of ?standing by as a passi-ve spectator? to the activities of fu-ndamentalists. ?The minimum the Prime Minister can do is to co-ndemn the march against the Po-pe on Doordarshan,? Faleiro said.
