Mumbai, Aug. 30: Two men arrested for extorting Rs 50 lakh from filmmaker Rakesh Roshan posing as CBI officers have cheated at least 20 more persons, agency officials said today.

Matriculate Ashwini Kumar Sharma and former MNC executive Rajesh Ranjan used beacon-fitted vehicles and carried a pile of files to give the impression that they were sleuths.

They threatened their victims — mainly businessmen and film industry figures embroiled in cases —with arrest or legal action if they did not pay up, according to complaints filed after the Roshan case came to light earlier this month.

Sharma and Ranjan were held on August 20 after Roshan approached the CBI. They had told the director that a case had been filed against him in connection with his 2010 movie Kites, which had flopped.

Sharma, a matriculate hailing from Haryana, is the owner of a sick hosiery unit, CBI officers said. Ranjan, based in Mumbai with roots in Bihar, has an MBA degree and was once a sales executive with an MNC. He built contacts on the job and had introduced Sharma to Roshan.

“We have seized fake case papers and Rs 28 lakh from his (Sharma’s) house. We expect at least 50-60 more complaints,” said CBI joint director (west) Rishi Raj Singh.
