New Delhi, March 1: An officer of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), hailing from Assam, was found hanging from the ceiling while his wife and two children were found hammered to death inside his official quarters in south Delhi around 4.30pm today.

Police said Ananya Chakraborty, 52, was an inspector-rank field officer and lived with his wife Jayashree, 45, son Arnab, 17, and daughter Disha, 11, at Sadiq Nagar.

No suicide note was found and prima facie it seems Ananya killed his wife and children with a hammer before committing suicide.

A blood-stained hammer was found beside the bodies.

“A preliminary probe revealed that the couple used to have fights regularly. Ananya was found hanging from the ceiling while Jayashree, Arnab and Disha had blunt injuries on their head and were lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom,” a Defence Colony police station official said.

There was no sign of foul play as there was no forced entry into the three-bedroom flat, a police official said.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Jayashree was a teacher at Lady Irwin School, a prestigious educational institution, in Defence Colony. “Jayashree was teaching social studies and had joined the school two months ago. She was from Calcutta,” the police official said.

Arnab was a student of class XI at Kendriya Vidyalaya while Disha studied in class VII in the same school.

Four days ago, Jayashree had lodged a complaint with Defence Colony police station against her husband, alleging torture, the police said.

“Acting on the complaint, we went to their house, spoke to Ananya and settled the matter. Jayashree agreed to withdraw the complaint,” a police official said.

S.P. Singh, a neighbour and a junior officer with RAW, said the two were very nice human beings but were introverts.

“I met them five days ago when they were returning after donating blood for a friend’s mother. It is a shocking incident,” he said.

The police said Anita, who works as a domestic help, rang the doorbell several times at 1pm but did not get any response.

She went to work at a nearby house and came back after an hour but again did not get any response.

“She alerted some neighbours and also called up Chakraborty’s family friend Moumita Das who lives nearby. Das and her husband called the couple’s mobile phones but those were switched off. They then informed us,” another police official said.

A police team reached the spot and found the door bolted from inside.

They asked the security guard of the government housing society to climb through the roof and open the window.

“He broke the glass window and noticed Ananya hanging from the ceiling but could not enter the room. So the police had to break open the door,” a neighbour said.

The couple, along with their children, had gone to attend a family friend’s wedding last night and had returned very late.

“It seems to be a planned act as we found the electricity wires of the house disconnected and the mobile phones of both Ananya and his wife were switched off. It seems he murdered them in the wee hours in a fit of rage,” a police official said.
