New Delhi, Dec. 3 :     In a move designed to raise the hackles of the Sangh parivar, communications minister Ram Vilas Paswan will issue a postal stamp on Jesus Christ to commemorate 2000 years of ??Christ Jayanti??. What could needle the BJP all the more, Paswan plans to invite Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to release the stamp on Christmas. December 25 is also Vajpayee?s birthday. The Catholic Church has made elaborate plans to mark ??Yesu Krist Jayanti ? 2000?? and several church organisations had requested Paswan to bring out a stamp on the occasion. The minister, sources said, readily agreed as it would send out a positive signal to Christians who have been at the receiving end of a series of attacks, especially in Gujarat and Orissa. The decision has raised eyebrows in the Sangh parivar, which has lashed out at the Pope for asking missionaries to evangelise south Asia. Sangh sources said they would object to the move as it was aimed at spreading Christianity. Voicing opposition, Vishwa Hindu Parishad Delhi unit president Rajendra Gupta, however, said he is not aware of the communication ministry?s plans. B.P. Singhal, convener of the Sanskriti Raksha Manch, an offshoot of the VHP, however, said his outfit would not object to the decision. ??Christ was a saint. So it is okay, though what his followers are doing is despicable,?? he said. Early this year, the government had drawn up plans to celebrate Christ Jayanti to placate the Christians following the murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons in Orissa and the spate of attacks on churches in Gujarat. But the Prime Minister was forced to abandon the plan following stiff opposition from RSS hardliners. Liberals in the BJP and the government, however, felt there was nothing wrong in celebrating Christ Jayanti as Vajpayee had earlier attended the Khalsa tercentenary celebrations. The Church has designed an emblem as part of the celebrations to spread the message of Christ. The emblem, which carries the inscription ??Yesu Krist Jayanti - 2000??, is titled ??Towards A New Society.?? The outer circle shows rays in pink, symbolising the rising sun. The emblem also has a globe in green which stands for the world ??filled with new hope??.
