Power theft jail

New Delhi, Sept. 28 (PTI): A businessman has been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment and fined Rs 37.99 lakh for stealing electricity to run his workshop in Delhi.

The court said a deterrent punishment must be imposed to make power theft a “wholly non-profitable venture”. Inderjeet had run up a power bill of Rs 25 lakh.

Cheque law

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court has sought the Centre’s response on a PIL seeking to quash a provision in the Negotiable Instruments Act relating to bouncing of cheques. The section provides for imprisonment of up to two years or a fine twice the amount of the cheque to the drawer of the cheque in the event of dishonour.

Rs 5-cr heist

New Delhi (PTI): Armed men looted over Rs 5 crore from a van carrying cash for ICICI Bank in Delhi’s upscale Defence Colony on Friday after shooting at one of its security guards. The robbers drove away with the van and abandoned it a few kilometres away. The gang had arrived at the scene in a Hyundai Verna.
