Madurai, Jan. 10 (PTI): Madras High Court has ruled that a rape case cannot be quashed even if the victim “resiles” from her allegations as the offence was not against any individual but against the State.
In another case, the Madurai bench of the court ruled a rape case cannot be quashed just because the results of the DNA test proved that the accused was not the biological father of the baby conceived and delivered by the victim after the assault.

Muzaffarnagar (PTI): Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a fatwa saying that providing a girl’s photo to a boy’s family for matrimonial purpose is not allowed under Islamic law. The fatwa came in response to a girl who had asked if her photo could be mailed to a boy’s family.
Dubai (PTI): An Indian, rendered disabled after a road accident in Oman in 2010, has been awarded a Rs 32 lakh-compensation by a Muscat court. The money (25,000 Omani riyals) has been sent to Sasikumar, from Kerala, through the Indian embassy.
Mumbai (PTI): Mumbai police have arrested 21 guards, working for various security agencies, for allegedly using firearms illegally. The guards, all of them from Jammu and Kashmir, allegedly did not secure a no-objection certificate to carry the weapons in Mumbai. The crack down began after a guard at a residential complex killed a lawyer, Pallavi Purkayastha, on August 9 last year.
New Delhi, Jan. 10: A four-judge bench of the Supreme Court today took up a batch of curative petitions filed by telecom companies challenging an earlier order. The order on February 2, 2012, cancelled 122 2G spectrum licences as they were illegally allotted during the tenure of former telecom minister A.Raja.

New Delhi (PTI): Zee editor Sudhir Chaudhary, one of the accused in an alleged Rs 100 crore extortion bid case, has told a Delhi court that Congress MP Naveen Jindal and 16 officers of his firm had levelled “false allegations” to defame him. Chaudhary has filed a criminal defamation complaint against Jindal and others.

New Delhi, Jan. 10 (PTI): Delhi high court today asked the Centre and the Election Commission to reply to a plea for court-monitored probe by an SIT or the CBI into the funds allegedly received by the Congress and the BJP from UK-based Vedanta Resources and Indian PSUs.
“Let respondents ministry of home affairs and Election Commission file their reply within two weeks. List this matter after three weeks on February 4,” said a bench of judges.
Bangalore (PTI): All colleges in Karnataka will have to establish a separate cell for harassment complaints, including sexual harassment of girl students and women lecturers. A directive was issued on Thursday to all colleges, with a 12-point guideline.
New Delhi (PTI): The Union cabinet on Thursday approved an additional Rs 600 crore for the reconstruction of a dam in Afghanistan, which is likely to be completed by the end of next year. The project over river Hira envisages irrigation facilities as well as power generation. Salma dam was constructed in 1976, but was damaged during the civil war.

Raipur (PTI): A huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from a Maoist den near Chhattisgarh-Maharashtra border in Rajnandgaon, police said on Thursday. The joint operation, the ITBP and police recovered 39 cartridges, four clay mines, 20 grenades and naxal literature from the site.
New Delhi (PTI): A Delhi court on Thursday fixed February 4 for framing charges against sacked CWG organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi to February 4. The judge deferred the framing of charges, saying she needs more time. Kalmadi had allegedly caused a Rs. 90 crore loss to the exchequer.
