Calcutta, Nov 26 :
Former Calcutta University official Manisha Mukherjee, who mysteriously disappeared over two years ago, has been seen in Assam.
Police claimed Manisha has been sighted in Kamakshya, dressed in a monk?s habit. ?We are sending a team to bring her back,? said deputy commissioner (detective department) Narayan Ghosh.
Former assistant controller of examinations, Calcutta University, Manisha went missing on September 3, 1997. That morning, her nephew had last seen her in a taxi near Golpark. Forty-year-old Manisha?s disappearance had sent ripples of shock and rumour eddying through Calcutta?s chatterati circles, not least because of her alleged closeness to CPM heavyweights.
Manisha?s mother Chinu Mukherjee had alleged that her daughter had been murdered by a powerful political lobby. She moved the high court, which asked the deputy commissioner, detective department, to probe the matter.
This is not the first time the police are saying that Manisha has been seen. Questions are also being raised as to why they made it public, knowing full well that Manisha would give them the slip after seeing media reports.
A person who refused to identify himself had called Manisha?s mother and said he had seen her in Bodh Gaya. Police teams sent there came back empty-handed.
Police said they had information that she had flown to Dhaka some time ago and lived with a Bangladeshi poet. When the police contacted him, the poet told them: ?We met in Bangladesh, but she left for Germany.? The police said they had evidence that she had been in Berlin.
After the police had given up and the case had been closed some time ago, it was reopened in May this year after Manisha?s mother met the deputy commissioner (detective department) with about 40 pictures and letters of her daughter. One of the pictures showed Gopal Banerjee ? former controller of examinations, Calcutta University ? in tantrik robes and performing religious rites at his ashram in Purulia. Behind him, out of focus, was a woman, who, Manisha?s mother claimed, was her daughter. Banerjee ? who lives in Calcutta and was questioned by the police ? could shed no light on her whereabouts.
The morning she went missing, Manisha was going to her parents? south Calcutta home from Bhowanipore, where she lived with her husband. Her husband and nephew were with her in the taxi. Her husband got off near Nizam Palace on AJC Bose Road, leaving Manisha and her nephew in the cab.
A few yards down the road, Manisha asked her nephew to alight. He refused, but eventually had to yield. Dropping him off near Golpark, Manisha sped away.
While investigating the case, the police had traced a bank officer with whom Manisha had had an affair. His rented flat in Jodhpur Park was searched and the man questioned. But no clue emerged. about the missing woman. A south Calcutta nursing home where Manisha was reportedly admitted after she went missing was also searched. But the trail went cold.
