New Delhi, Oct. 29: Yesterday’s “postponed” Metallica concert at Gurgaon was cancelled today, prompting the US band to tweet a message to fans and the police to arrest four employees of organiser DNA Networks.

Metallica tweeted around 2.15am that its first show in India, planned in the run-up to tomorrow’s F1 race, stood cancelled “for the safety of you, the fans”.

Last evening, DNA had declared the concert postponed for “technical reasons” after vandalism by fans amid poor security. Its spokesperson Karuna Prithvi today admitted there were “more than 30,000” fans at the venue whose capacity was only 15,000-20,000. She had no explanation.

The police have arrested DNA general manager (operations) Rajesh Chandwani with colleagues Ashok Kumar, Savio Faleiro and Umesh Chinara. They were charged with breach of trust and cheating for cancelling the show without informing the authorities.

A court sent them to six days’ police remand after the force pleaded that the accused be denied bail till all ticket-holders are refunded. The police have seized the Rs 1 crore bank guarantee given by DNA, which will be adjusted against the refund amount.

Police sources and the organisers told The Telegraph that 38,000 tickets had been sold for about Rs 11 crore, which comes to an average price of nearly Rs 2,900 per ticket. DNA, a Bangalore-based event management firm, has offered full refund.

Online and corporate tickets can be couriered to a Bangalore-based ticketing firm ticketgenie.com. The refund will cover the courier charges, a company spokesperson said.

Tickets bought from retail outlets can be returned to the respective outlets with a printout of the booking ID number for a cash refund.

Police sources said those arrested have indicated that Metallica’s technicians had objected to the inferior quality of the sound system and pulled out. Neither Metallica nor the police have made an official statement on this, though.

An officer said the facts would become clear when the accused are questioned.

DNA spokesperson Prithvi said: “They (the fans) were pushing against the barricade, which collapsed as it was not strong enough. Therefore we took a call that it was not safe to carry on with the concert.”

No cases have been registered against the vandals.
