Ahmedabad: A 40-year-old woman was lynched on Tuesday in Ahmedabad on the suspicion of being a child-lifter.

A mob attacked four women travelling in an auto-rickshaw, inspector J.A. Rathva of Vadaj police station said.

"We have registered a case of rioting and murder against around 30 unidentified people. Shanti Marwadi, 40, suffered critical injuries after she was beaten up by the mob and died shortly after being admitted to hospital," he added.

Anasiben Marwadi, a relative of the deceased who was with her, said they belonged to a community that earned a living by begging and had come to Ahmedabad from Pali in Rajasthan sometime ago.

"Some men came on motorbikes and intercepted us at Juna Vadaj. They accused us of being child-lifters. More locals joined them and overturned the auto. They punched and kicked us," she said in her complaint.

Several people have been attacked by mobs across the country in recent weeks on rumours of child-lifting, with two deaths reported from Bengal alone. PTI
