New Delhi, Aug. 6 :    New Delhi, Aug. 6:  Former Union minister and Congress leader Kalpnath Rai died here early this morning following a heart attack. He was 58 and is survived by his wife, son and five daughters. Rai, who suffered the attack past midnight, was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where he died around 2 am, family and hospital sources said. Vice-president Krishan Kant, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dixit and many Congress leaders, including Sitaram Kesri, and Janata Dal leader Sharad Yadav visited Rai?s house to pay homage. Wreaths were placed on his body on behalf of President K.R. Narayanan and Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee. In his condolence message, Narayanan said throughout his life Rai remained a committed social worker and will be remembered for his contribution to rural reconstruction. Vajpayee also condoled his death. Mulayam Singh Yadav described Rai?s death as a personal loss. He added that the country has lost a frank and outspoken politician. Rai?s body will be cremated at the Manikarnika Ghat on the banks of the Ganga in Varanasi tomorrow with full state honours. His body will be brought to Mau district in Uttar Pradesh tomorrow morning, from where it will be taken to his village, Sameri. Rai was Union minister for nine years during the tenure of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Narasimha Rao, but later fell out with Rao following his detention for having sanctioned the stay of some Tada accused in a state guest house. In 1993-94, during his tenure as minister of state for food he was involved in the sugar scam.
