New Delhi: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani announced in Chikmagalur, Karnataka, on Friday that he would campaign against the BJP in the Assembly polls in the southern state and in two others, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Among the eight states that vote in 2018, these three are the largest.
"Even in Gujarat I did not ask people to vote in favour of any political party, but asked voters to defeat... the BJP. The same goes with Karnataka, MP and Rajasthan. I don't care who wins. I care about the BJP's defeat," he told The Telegraph.
After announcing his decision on Friday, at a programme for communal harmony in Chikmagalur where saffron outfits want to replace a Sufi shrine with a temple, Mevani said: "Activists of Karnataka, irrespective of organisation and party affiliations, must raise an alliance. Nominate 10, 12 or 15 activists and tell the Congress to withdraw its candidates from those seats so the voices of Dalits, Muslims and the poor can be raised effectively in the Assembly...."
