Indian held for nurse assault
• NEW YORK: An Indian-American doctor here has been arrested for allegedly trying to strangulate a nurse with an elastic cord as he was upset with her for administering an injection into his patient at a "wrong time", police said. Venkatesh Sasthakonar, 44, through his attorney, has denied the allegation and said that the January 22 incident has been blown out of proportion. Sasthakonar, a weight loss surgeon at Nassau University Medical Center in New York, has been arrested and charged with felony strangulation and assault. The police said the nurse was treated for pain in her neck. PTI
Fishermen arrest
• RAMESWARAM: Eight Indian fishermen were arrested on Thursday by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel for allegedly fishing near Neduntheevu in the country's northern territorial waters, the navy said in Colombo. They also seized two trawlers of the fishermen. PTI

• MUMBAI: Bombay High Court on Thursday directed the Maharashtra government to seek suggestions from multiplexes' associations, and take a stand on permitting cinema goers to carry their own food items inside theatres. Fire brigade threat
• MUMBAI: The Mumbai Fire Brigade Officers Association (FBOA) has threatened to stop carrying out fire safety inspections of commercial establishments in the city from February seeking better working conditions. In a letter, the FBOA said that since the fire officers remain busy in the firefighting work, the task of fire safety compliance checks was causing "additional stress". PTI

• CHENNAI: More than 1,000 idols from 387 temples in Tamil Nadu were stolen in the past 25 years despite enhanced security steps, the state government has informed Madras High Court. Of the over 1,200 theft cases reported, only 56 had been solved, it added. PTI

NCERT test on Feb 5
new delhi: New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training will hold the second cycle of the National Assessment Survey for Class X students on February 5. The test will be held in five subjects - mathematics, modern Indian languages, English, science and social science. The council has written to all school boards to ensure that 360 affiliated schools from each participate in the test. The test is to gauge the quality of learning and laxity in school education. PTI

new delhi: Rahul Gandhi on Thursday appointed aide Krishna Allavaru as joint secretary of the party in charge of the Indian Youth Congress. Allavaru replaces Suraj Hegde who was the AICC secretary in charge of the Youth Congress. Allavaru is the second person to be made AICC joint secretary after Ruchi Gupta of the Congress's National Students Union of India.

kanpur: An IIT Kanpur student has accused an air force officer of raping her repeatedly after promising marriage. Cases have been lodged under 5 IPC sections. The victim named two relatives of the accused in her FIR. The girl will be produced before the magistrate concerned for the recording of her statements under section 164 of CrPC. PTI

new delhi : Delhi High Court has directed the principal secretary (health) of the AAP government to appear before it after the state failed to indicate the timeframe for filing an audit report on hospitals. The court, which had earlier ordered an audit of Delhi government hospitals, noted that the order had not been complied with. PTI
