The parliamentary standing committee on communications and information technology has summoned Twitter’s representatives in India, a day after it was reported that a former employee of the company has complained to the US authorities that the Indian government forced the firm to hire its agents.

A revised notice issued by the Lok Sabha secretariat on Wednesday has scheduled a session of the committee on Friday evening “to hear the views of the representatives of Twitter India on the subject ‘Citizens’ Data Security and Privacy’”.

Committee proceedings are privileged and its chairman Shashi Tharoor did not respond to queries on why the microblogging platform’s executives had been summoned.

Last year, the committee had summoned Facebook’s India executives after a former data scientist of the platform alleged that the company was delayed taking action against BJP MP Vinod Sonkar for allegedly running a network of fake accounts.
