HC App ban plea

NEW DELHI: Delhi High Court on Friday asked the Centre to consider a representation seeking a ban on social networking sites and mobile applications through which abusive and vulgar messages can be sent by hiding the sender's identity. The court passed the direction while hearing a petition seeking to ban the Saudi Arabia-based social networking website and mobile application, Sarahah.com and Sarahah, through which the alleged abusive messages were allegedly being sent. The petitioner dubbed this cyber bullying. PTI

Armymen arrested

LUCKNOW: Two army personnel have been arrested from Uttar Pradesh's Etawah for allegedly trying to molest the daughter of a retired judicial officer in the Magadh Express on November 29, police said on Friday. The girl was on her way to Delhi from Allahabad. The incident occurred in the S-8 coach of the train. PTI

Hat symbol

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Friday told Delhi High Court that the "hat" symbol was free and the returning officer would decide to whom it could be allotted after the filing of nominations for the by-election to Tamil Nadu's RK Nagar Assembly seat. The response came after the court asked if the V.K. Sasikala Natarajan-T.T.V. Dinakaran group of the AIADMK could use the hat symbol. PTI

ATM cash looted

NASHIK: Unidentified persons allegedly looted Rs 23.12 lakh in cash by breaking open an ATM of the State Bank Of India at Satana town near Nashik on Thursday. Police said the accused broke the ATM by using a gas-cutter. They also tried to loot another bank's ATM nearby, but did not succeed, the police added. PTI

'Terror' conviction

JAIPUR: A Jaipur court has convicted eight Lashkar-e-Toiba members, including three Pakistani nationals, for their involvement in terrorist activities in the country. It will pronounce the punishment on Monday. PTI

Tax raids in UP

MUZAFFARNAGAR: Income tax department sleuths raided the residence of a trader in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district and seized nearly Rs 2.5 crore in cash, an official said on Friday. PTI

Gomti river probe under CBI 

New Delhi: The CBI has taken over the investigation into alleged irregularities in the Rs 1,500-crore Gomti riverfront development project in Lucknow by registering an FIR against eight engineers, officials said on Friday. The Uttar Pradesh government had started an inquiry into the beautification of the riverfront, done by the former Samajwadi Party government. The Yogi Adityanath government wanted the matter referred to the CBI, which took over the investigation on Thursday. PTI

Yamuna water

NEW DELHI: The NGT on Friday directed the inspection of a land in a Najafgarh village here, which has been identified as a site for setting up of a sewage treatment plant to clean waste water flowing into the Yamuna. A team of officers from the Delhi Jal Board and the Delhi government will conduct site inspection and submit a status report.PTI 

Goa power arrears 

PANAJI: The Goa electricity department is sitting on arrears of Rs 200 crore that is yet to be recovered from various government departments and outfits, state power minister Pandurang Madkaikar said. Madkaikar added that the electricity department was facing financial issues as the bills were not being paid despite repeated reminders.  PTI

Omar family case

NEW DELHI: Delhi High Court has directed former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah to participate “without any delay” in the maintenance proceedings involving his estranged wife in a family court here. The high court said Omar should address the arguments before the family court on December 12. PTI

Nepal arrests 

KATHMANDU: Two Indians were arrested in Nepal on Friday on the suspicion of carrying explosive devices, police said, ahead of the second phase of parliamentary and local elections in the neighbouring country. PTI

Water secretary

NEW DELHI: National Mission for Clean Ganga director-general Upendra Prasad Singh on Friday assumed charge of as Union water resources secretary, an official statement said. PTI

Ayodhya plea in SC 

New Delhi: A human rights organisation has urged the Supreme Court not to treat the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case like a “narrow property dispute” but “recognise the ramifications of letting religion dictate the fate of a piece of land”. The Citizens for Justice and Peace has filed an intervention plea backed by several prominent citizens from various walks of life, including filmmaker Shyam Benegal, filmmaker and actress Aparna Sen, activists Ganesh Devy and Medha Patkar, writers Anil Dharker and Kiran Nagarkar. 

Former CJI dead

NEW DELHI:  Former Chief Justice of India Adarsh Sein Anand died of cardiac arrest here on Friday, family sources said. Justice Anand, 81, is survived by his wife and three daughters. Justice Anand would be cremated on December 3 at 
the Lodhi cremation ground here, they said. PTI

Officer arrested

HYDERABAD: The Telangana anti-corruption bureau on Friday said that it had arrested an administrative officer working with the state transport commissioner’s office for allegedly possessing disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 2.20 crore. PTI

Letterhead fraud

NEW DELHI: The CBI has booked three persons for allegedly extracting money from job aspirants and railway contractors by using forged letterheads of Union minister Ramdas Athawale, agency officials said here on Friday. The accused also used a range of other fake documents that included appointment letters purportedly issued by the chief personnel officer of the railways. PTI

Kho-kho manager

THANE: The manager of a kho-kho team from Ahmedanagar was arrested on Friday by Thane’s Kapurbawdi police for 
allegedly being responsible for the death of one of the team members in a road accident in 2016.  PTI

Student body found

THANE: The dead body of a 22-year-old college student was found near the railway tracks close to Badlapur station near Thane in the early hours on Friday.PTI
