Dual Roles Were The Thing On The Big Screen. But It?s Trendy On Television, Too, Now. And Gaurav Chanana In Hey...Yehi To Hai Wo Is The First Male ?double? On TV. By Sneha Hazarika Published 29.04.05, 12:00 AM

Double roles were exclusives of films not very long ago. But of late double roles have become a common feature on television, too. Sandhya Mridul was much loved with Hubahu on Sony a few years back. Last year there were two ? child artiste Hansika Motwani?s Hum Do Hain Na and Hema Malini?s TV take on her Seeta Aur Geeta as Kamini Damini on Sahara One.

In the midst of all the competition Gaurav Chanana has held his own with his double take in Sanjay Wadhwa?s Hey...Yehi To Hai Wo on Star One. To the question that his second name seems to be a tongue twister, he has this to say: ?Come on, it?s easy. It?s spelt Chanana but pronounced Chaaanna?.

For those who have missed out on the story of Hey...Yehi To Hai Wo, we have it for you from Gaurav?s mouth. ?It?s a story of identical twins, Raj and Sameer, who get separated at birth and grow up living totally different lives. It all began when the father of the twins deceives his wife, and sells one of the twins to a rich but childless man. Events take a turn one day when Sameer, who works as a waiter in a restaurant, witnesses a road accident and discovers that the man run over is identical to him?Raj.?

Though it started as a light-hearted comedy, it has now developed into a thriller. About the development Gaurav says, ?The Spanish series from which Hey...Yehi To? is adapted had a similar turn. Moreover, a change definitely garners audience attention?.

Gaurav is from Delhi and had started out as a model. Gaurav?s good looks and his ?natural lenses?, as he calls his coloured eyes, eventually led him into modelling. ?But I was always an actor. In Delhi too I prepared to be an actor,? he says. After endorsing a couple of famous brands his big break in acting came with Sanjivani? A Medical Boon, in 2002, a much-hyped serial inspired by ER. But after a few episodes, Gaurav was replaced by Mihir Mishra. There were a lot of talks about Gaurav?s high-handed behaviour, his leaving because of film offers, et al. However, Gaurav has a totally different story to tell. ?My character of young Dr Rahul Mehra was much adored. But due to certain personal problems I had to leave. I was getting a lot of adulation but I felt I was not able to give it my 100 per cent.?

Then after a gap of a year Gaurav was spotted in the promos of industrialist Vijaypat Singhania?s heavily plugged first film, Wo Tera Naam Tha, that were splashed on different channels. There were three other new actors in the film apart from Gaurav. But unfortunately the film was a dud.

However, Gaurav acknowledges it sportingly. ?My film Woh Tera Naam Tha was a big flop. Unfortunately, it did not work at all. All of us (the new actors, producer and the director) gave our best. But maybe it was fate, destiny.? Was it a wrong choice? Should he have selected a better, a known banner? ?Kuku ji (Kuku Kohli) is a good director who has successfully launched many newcomers. And I am one of those who don?t regret anything in life?, he says.

Maybe his positive attitude has paid off. His costars from Woh Tera Naam Tha ? Arjan Bawa, Kanchi Kaul and Shalini Pal ? are still trying to find their ground. On the other hand, Gaurav has moved on to something better. Hey...Yehi To Hai Wo happened a few months after the failure of Woh Tera Naam Tha. And it?s one of the most talked-about serials on StarOne today.

But does he miss being on the big screen? Should he have waited for a better banner to launch him? ?I repeat, I don?t regret anything. I don?t think on those lines, like what would have been if I were this or if I were that,? he asserts. In an industry where star sons have it relatively easy, Gaurav is okay with the fact that he is not a star son. ?Whatever I am, I belong to my parents. I am proud of being my parent?s son,? he asserts.

He continues: ?I thank all those who find me good looking. I think I have got good eyes, though I feel the other features are just about okay. My eyes are a mixture of hazel and grey green. They are my mother?s gift to me. She also has similar eyes?. By now its clear that Gaurav?s motto in life is do your duty and leave the rest to God? Hey?that?s Gaurav after all.
