Mumbai: A plane carrying the mortal remains of actress Sridevi landed in Mumbai on Tuesday night, over 72 hours after she died in a hotel room in Dubai.

Dubai authorities on Tuesday released the body after determining that Sridevi had drowned in the hotel bathtub following loss of consciousness on Saturday evening.

"Dubai Public Prosecution has approved the release of the body of the Indian actress Sridevi to her family following the completion of a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of her death," the Dubai government's media office said in a series of tweets.

"Dubai Public Prosecution stressed that all regular procedures followed in such cases have been completed. As per the forensic report, the death of the Indian actress occurred due to accidental drowning following loss of consciousness. The case has now been closed."

The media office did not say why she lost consciousness.

Sridevi's husband Boney Kapoor, accompanied by his son Arjun Kapoor, took the body from the morgue, got it embalmed and flew to Mumbai in a plane owned by industrialist Anil Ambani that had been parked at the Dubai airport since Sunday. The cremation is scheduled on Wednesday around 3.30pm.

"On behalf of Khushi, Janhvi, Boney Kapoor, the entire Kapoor and Ayyappan families, a sincere thanks to the media for your continued sensitivity and support during this emotional moment," a statement issued by the family said.

Boney spent the night at a police station in Dubai and was questioned for 18 hours, during which, sources said, he broke down several times. Actor Arjun Kapoor, Boney's son from his first wife Mona Shourie Kapoor, flew to Dubai on Tuesday morning to be with his father.
