Children who lost their fathers to farm suicides participate in a protest against the agrarian crisis at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Wednesday. The 40-odd children, who live in an ashram at Nashik in Maharashtra, were brought to the capital as part of a yatra that began at Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh, where farmers were recently killed in police firing.

The firing in the BJP-ruled state was raised in Parliament by Raju Shetti, farmer leader and BJP ally, who asked: "Are farmers terrorists that they should be fired at and killed?"

The Swabhimani Paksha leader accused the Centre of not keeping Narendra Modi's poll promises to farmers and walked out of the Lok Sabha.

Shetti, who was repeatedly interrupted by BJP members who accused him of lying, reminded the ruling party of Modi's promise to ensure that farmers earned 50 per cent more than their input costs. "Nothing has happened so far," he said.

Farmers across states were being compelled to commit suicide as they were not getting a proper price for their produce, he alleged.
