New Delhi, Aug. 23: The CPM today handed over Rs 10 lakh to the parents of Junaid Khan, the 16-year-old lynched on a train ahead of Id in June by a mob that called him a beefeater and picked him out as he was wearing a skullcap.

Two cheques of Rs 5 lakh each were handed over to Jalauddin and Saira by politburo member Brinda Karat on behalf of the party's Kerala unit at their home in Khatawli village of Ballabhgarh in BJP-ruled Haryana.

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayanhad met the family last month on a Delhi visit where Saira was said to have expressed a wish to set up a school for girls in Junaid's name. Today, the CPM leaders told the family the money was only a token of the party's strong solidarity with them.

Brinda alleged "subversion of justice" as four of the six arrested have got bail. Junaid's murder while returning home after Id shopping in Delhi had triggered the wave of "Not In My Name" protests.
