K. Prithika Yashini leaves Madras High Court on Friday, a day after the decks were cleared for her to be appointed Tamil Nadu's first transgender sub-inspector.

On Thursday, the court had directed the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board to appoint her to the post as "she is entitled to get the job".

Yashini's application for the post was initially rejected, following which she moved the high court. She had cited a Supreme Court judgment directing state and central governments to take steps to treat transgenders as socially and educationally backward citizens and extend to them reservation in admissions to educational institutions and public appointments.

The court said: "She is entitled to be recruited to the post of sub-inspector and for declaration of her result with the hope that she will carry out the duties with dedication... to advance the cause of other transgenders." PTI report, AFP picture
