Srinagar, Nov. 10 :
Four Indian soldiers, including an officer, and at least 17 Pakistani soldiers were killed in a fierce gunbattle in the Uri sector late last night.
Defence sources here said Pakistani troops rained shells on ?Faulad? post in the Boniyar-Gulmarg sector in an attempt to capture it. The Indian troops, however,
foiled the raid and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy.
Seventeen Pakistani soldiers were killed, a defence spokesman here said. Four Indian soldiers, including Captain G.S. Suri, also laid down their lives. The gunfire could
be heard in Uri and adjoining areas of Baramullah.
This morning, shells hit the tourist resort of Gulmarg, damaging a cable car project building. No one was injured. By afternoon, the area had calmed down, sources said.
The commander of 15 Corps, Lt Gen. Krishan Pal, had recently said that shelling along the Line Of Control (LoC) had decreased
drastically. But intermittent shelling is still continuing, though the higher reaches of north Kashmir have already experienced heavy snowfall.
A group of heavily-armed militants fired rockets late last night at an army camp in Wakoora Ganderbal in chief minister Farooq Abdullah?s constituency, killing two soldiers, including a junior commissioned officer. The troops returned the fired and the shootout continued for nearly an hour. Before fleeing, the militants torched a house
belonging to a counter-insurgent. Search operations have been mounted in the area.
Four soldiers were killed and five others wounded in another gunbattle at Amrohi Karnah in Kupwara district. Police said the casualties occured when militants and security forces exchanged heavy fire.
In fierce fighting between militants and security forces in north Kashmir, 10 militants were killed in the past 24 hours.
The BSF and Special Operations Group of the state police raided a terrorist hideout in Sangrama village near Sopore. The security forces came under heavy fire from the militants, resulting in serious injuries to two soldiers. The defence personnel fired back. Bodies of five militants belonging to the Lashkar-e-Toiba were later recovered. Security forces have mounted a massive search operation in Yusmarg.
Probe into crossfire deaths
A magisterial probe has been ordered into the deaths of a Jammu and Kashmir Bank employee and his pregnant wife during an exchange of fire between militants and security forces at Nowhatta on November 7.
Kashmir divisional commissioner Khursheed Ganai ordered the inquiry under
Srinagar deputy commissioner Tanvira Jahan and asked her to submit the report within a month.
