Patna, Sept. 6 :    Patna, Sept. 6:  The BJP has decided to soften its stand on naming the proposed state of Jharkhand as Vananchal. The move is an attempt to win over the splinter Jharkhand factions which are at loggerheads on the issue. Sources said the BJP would avoid referring to the proposed state as Vananchal during its election campaign. Leaflets would also be distributed in the South Bihar areas, urging the people to support the cause championed by the BJP instead of squabbling over the name of the proposed state. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee?s two-day campaign in South Bihar gets under way on September 11. BJP spokesperson Kiran Ghai told The Telegraph that the party was against causing a split in tribal votes for the sake of retaining the name it had suggested for the proposed state of Jharkhand. ?We want everyone to support us on the issue because we have to garner enough seats in the Assembly polls as well. We will be able to ensure passage of the statehood Bill in the Assembly only if we have enough legislators on our side,? she said. The change in tack comes in the wake of allegations by the Jharkhand Party that the BJP was planning to propagate ?a saffron culture?in the region by naming the proposed state as Vananchal. Having taken a large section of Jharkhand leaders into its fold, the BJP is also facing pressure from within to stick to the name ?Jharkhand?. The party now seems to have realised that it can make a dent in the Congress votebank by easing its stand on the issue. The Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal alliance is contesting nine of the 14 Lok Sabha seats in the region. The Jharkhand parties have been campaigning against the BJP, saying the latter raised the statehood issue before the last polls but discarded it later. ?It found time to push through the Patents Bill, but conveniently put the statehood issue on the backburner. It is raising the issue once again now that polls are being held,? said Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Suraj Mandal. He said only his party could translate the people?s dream of statehood into reality. The Congress has also joined the Jharkhand bandwagon, accusing the BJP of raising the statehood issue for poll gains only. ?The BJP raises the issue only during polls,?? said Congress leader and former minister Shakaeruzzaman.
