Lucknow, March 28 :     A major disaster was averted at Ayodhya this morning when an eight-kg bomb was recovered from the railway station, teeming with devotees returning from the Ram Navami fair. But the bomb exploded later, injuring six policemen, including senior superintendent Anil Agarwal, when its detonator was being removed at the police lines in Faizabad. Two of the policemen are in critical condition and have been brought to Lucknow for treatment. The bomb, found with a timer around 6 am, would have exploded at 7.35 am when two trains, the Jammu-Tawi Express from Sealdah and the Marudhar Express from Jodhpur, were to pass. A bag was discovered lying under a bench by a tea vendor at 5.40 am, Faizabad police commissioner S.P. Singh said. The vendor immediately informed the railway police who found the bomb inside. It was defused on the spot. Later, the bomb squad was called from Ayodhya. The squad took it to the police lines and were de-activating the detonator when it went off, injuring the policemen. S.P. Singh said it was too early to say who was behind the incident. But he added: ?It is possible that it was brought to disrupt the meeting of chief minister Kalyan Singh at Ram Katha park yesterday. Because of heavy security, it was not possible to plant the bomb. The culprits may have then decided to plant it in the railway station and cause extensive damage to travellers.? ?A major tragedy was averted,? the commissioner said. The DIG (railways) added: ?The work done by the railway police is commendable.? Kalyan Singh has announced an award of Rs 25,000 each to the policemen who are critically injured, Rs 15,000 each to the other injured policemen, except the superintendent, and Rs 10,000 to the tea vendor.
