Chennai, Feb. 4: Release of alleged conversations between DMK MP Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi’s personal secretary, and Kalaignar TV managing director with former Tamil Nadu’s ADGP intelligence Jaffer Sait has hit the DMK hard.
In what appears to be an attempt to cover up the 2G scam, the first recording involving Sait and Sharad Kumar Reddy, the managing director of Kalaignar TV, was released on Sunday by savukku.net (whip), a whistleblower website.
Thereafter, the local media was agog that more recordings involving Kanimozhi and Sait would be released.
Incidentally, Kanimozhi was hospitalised on Sunday afternoon, sparking rumours about her health. The DMK and the hospital claimed she had merely suffered exhaustion and required intravenous fluids before her discharge on Monday. For the DMK, the leak of the recordings allegedly made by Sait himself between December 2010 and February 2011 would bring the party and more importantly, Kanimozhi, into uncomfortable focus. “It could actually affect Kanimozhi and Sharad Reddy’s petitions before the Supreme Court seeking discharge from the 2G case, as it prima facie proves money came to Kalaignar TV from Shahid Balwa and attempts to cover up Kanimozhi’s own term as director of the channel by backdating documents, which is being admitted by Sharad Reddy,” said a senior criminal lawyer.
He however, doubted if it could result in the cancellation of bail to Kanimozhi and Reddy, since the conversations had happened before their arrest in May, 2011.
DMK would have to combat the ghost of 2G just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, just as it had fought a losing battle before the 2011 Assembly elections. “It would now be difficult for the DMDK to align with the DMK, since the taint of the 2G could hit that party’s prospects as well,” said H. Raja, the state BJP secretary.
On Sunday, DMDK had organised his party’s “anti-corruption” conference aimed at gauging the mood of the cadres on who to align with.
