After the bhabhi, it’s time for the devrani. Seven years after Bhabhi captured the imagination and interest of Indian households, Hamari Devrani — all set to replace the long running family drama — is STAR Plus’s newest offering in the weekday matinee time band (starting today, 1.30pm). Tracing the life and times of the Ahmedabad based Nanavati household, Hamari Devrani focuses on the often bitter, seldom sweet relationship between the five elder bahus of the family and the youngest devrani.

“Nothing works as well as a Gujarati family on Indian television and that is the reason why Hamari Devrani is centred around a family living in Gujarat,” smiles producer Shobhana Desai who has a host of successful serials like Shagun and Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka to her credit. But Desai is clear about the fact that Hamari Devrani is more about the devrani Bhakti (played by newcomer Krishna) and less about the Nanavati family. “Bhakti is an average girl next door who has been considered unlucky all her life and shunned by society. The serial traces her evolution from a shy, timid girl into a strong and confident woman willing to take on society and her detractors. I am hoping that the serial strikes a chord with every woman who watches it,” says the producer. An all new starcast is also one of the factors that the makers of Hamari Devrani are banking on. “ My character goes through extreme emotional upheavals. It’s been a real challenge to essay a role like this,” says Krishna.

The afternoon slot may have a lot of takers, but the producers of Hamari Devrani are eyeing the evening primetime band. “The afternoon shows have their own following but I am definitely looking at an evening slot. Let the show begin; we will prove ourselves worthy of it,” smiles Desai.
