Gary Oldman's former wife Donya Fiorentino has slammed the Academy Awards for honouring two men, including the British actor, despite their alleged histories of domestic violence.
“Congratulations, Gary and congratulations to the Academy for awarding not one but two abusers with Oscars,” Fiorentino told TMZ. “I thought we had evolved. What happened to the #MeToo movement?”
Fiorentino also referred to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who won the Oscar for best animated short film. The former Los Angeles Lakers star paid out an undisclosed settlement with a hotel employee in 2005 after she accused him of rape.
Oldman, 59, won the best actor award for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. Fiorentino, who was married to the actor from 1997-2001 and has two sons with him, had lodged a case of domestic violence against Oldman in 2001. Both men have denied the allegations against them, but the wins were still seen as controversial as the ceremony was dedicated to the #MeToo movement.
