BE IT A MEAL OR A QUICK MUNCH, YOUNGISTAN IS JUST MAD ABOUT THE MOMO. THE T2 CAMPUS TEAM GOES A-TASTING... WHERE DO YOU GO FOR BUDGET MOMOS? TELL T2@ABP.IN Published 31.05.13, 12:00 AM

Last week we told you how steamed momos and such healthy food options have stolen a chomp over oily munchies. Here’s the lowdown on GenY’s favourite dumpling destinations in town.

Momo Plaza: This tiny Tibetan eatery on Suburban Hospital Road, next to Elgin Road, is the first name that pops into many a momo lover’s mind. A bowl of Thukpa and a plate of steamed, fried or pan-fried momo are good to fill you up without a hole in your pocket. “The momos are fat enough to make you happy and the fiery red chilli sauce is simply awesome! You get great food for an unbelievably low price, what more can a student ask for?” said Anindita of Viharilal College For Home & Social Science.

Pop picks: Pan-fried chicken momo and mutton steamed momo.

t2 tip: If you have a long nose for ambience, this is not the place for you.

The Blue Poppy:A cosy stop tucked into the ground floor of Gorkha Bhavan opposite City Centre Salt Lake, The Blue Poppy is a pork lover’s paradise. Their pork momo is melt-in-the-mouth and the steamed version scores over the pan-fried. Chicken and vegetarian momos are also on the menu. What sets these momos apart is the rich sauce that is made from scratch in the Blue Poppy kitchen. At Rs 80 a plate, it’s steeper than other places but it’s money well-spent.

Pop pick: Any pork preparation.

t2 tip: It’s closed on the last Sunday of every month.

Bapida’r Momo: It is hard to miss the huge crowd around a small set-up near Karunamoyee bus stop in Salt Lake. Hygienic setting and quality food served with a smile set Bapida’r stall apart. Four pieces for Rs 15 is a killer deal, especially the chicken momo. A thin layer of dough over-stuffed with chicken mince, it’s something you’ve never tasted before. “I have had roadside momos from so many places but this is undoubtedly the best,” said Soumyadeep Banerjee of Scottish Church College.

t2 tip: Bapida sets up his shop at 5pm every day and everything is sold out by 7pm.

Momo Hut: With an array of Chinese dishes, Momo Hut located in Salt Lake Sector III is most famous for its mutton steamed momo. The menu also has chicken and pork options. “They let us mix and match flavours and gravies according to our tastes. We also get pan-fried momos here, which are wow!” said Anwesha Bhattacharjee of Jadavpur University, a regular at Momo Hut.

Pop pick: Mutton steamed momo, what else?!

t2 tip: Be creative. Mix and match flavours till you make your own momo magic.

Denzong Kitchen: Located in Bikramgarh, this little kitchen is on the autorickshaw route between Jadavpur 8B bus stand and Tollygunge Metro station.

Served straight from steaming containers, Denzong’s momos are always piping hot. The best part is the little blob of butter in the middle, so when you take a bite, the momo melts in your mouth. “Generously stuffed with delicious fillings and served with a chilli dip, Denzong’s momos make this place a hot favourite for us,” said Saptarshi Dutta of Jadavpur University.

Pop pick: Chicken steamed momo.

t2 tip: Try their Thukpa as well.

Wow! Momo: With 16 outlets spread across the city, from New Market to Gariahat to Sector V, Wow! Momo is one of the popular spots to indulge your momo cravings. Then there’s the one-of-its-kind chocolate momo.

Pop picks: Schezwan momo and pan-fried momo.

t2 tip: Grab a chair as soon as you walk in as it’s crowded most of the time.

Mainland China: Though expensive, this is the best place for sui mai or dumplings — posher names for our good ol’ momos! They are available in prawn, chicken and vegetarian varieties, the prawn sui mai being one of the most popular and a complete delight for seafood lovers.

Pop picks: Prawn and chicken dumplings.

t2 tip: Go there when someone else is footing the bill!
