If you are a fan of quieter, non-logo shouting handbags, you have probably heard of Calonge (ca-lon-j). This made-in-India brand, named after the Spanish city of Calonge that specialises in hand-braided leather accessories, launched its latest line at The Box at The Park on Thursday afternoon.

Priced between Rs 1,500 and Rs 15,000, the handcrafted goodness of these babies have to be touched to be believed — caress that leather, inspect it up close and you will get that unmissable Bottega Veneta vibe.

“It’s nothing less than any international brand. There is a new age of Indians who believe in Indian brands. It’s old fashioned to say I only buy foreign brands. I think we have all crossed that,” says Sethu Vaidyanathan of Calonge.

Delhi and Mumbai might agree but Calcuttans who are just beginning to discover the joys of a monogram might not be ready to nod just yet. “Give it some time,” Sethu smiles.

Calonge’s portfolio includes everything from basic footwear and bags to with-it accessories like evening clutches and iPad covers. Strolleys are their latest addition. Everything is handwoven by highly skilled women in Chennai. “Our strength is not just the leather, it is the hard work of these ladies. Some weaves like our flower weave takes 25 to 28 days to complete,” adds Sethu.

The current collection celebrates classics like black, coffee, beach and wine.
