After ruling your playlist, One Direction is all set to rule your reading list!
Anna Todd, a 25-year-old in Texas, has bagged a three-book deal with publishers Simon & Schuster after her fan fiction on the website Wattpad became a rage, gathering 800 million reads.
Todd posted her fanfic in 300 daily instalments, telling the story of 18-year-old Tessa Young whose “simple life” is “shattered... [by] a rude boy named Harry”. Tessa falls for Harry’s good looks and his love of Jane Austen and also meets his friends Niall, Liam, Zayn and Louis. Fan fiction has become an important part of being a Directioner. t2 asked two Directioners in Calcutta to explain the what, where and why...
We all love to imagine something good happening to us and it is even better when we imagine ourselves with our dream people. For Directioners, the only goal is to meet and marry or date any of the cute and hot guys of One Direction. But this dream will not become a reality for many of us. Lucky people like Sophia Smith, Eleanor Calder, Perrie Edwards and Danielle Peazer have actually lived our dream. These girls are one of the barriers between us and our boys, the others being money, concert barricades, parents and millions of other girls. And them boys say “Nothing can come between you and I”!

So, in order to fulfil our dreams, we read, write and experience fan fiction and imagines. These fulfil our wishes and desires of dating Niall Horan, kissing Liam Payne, slow dancing with Harry Styles, hugging Louis Tomlinson and getting cuddled by Zayn Malik. These stories give us MASSIVE feels. They can make us cry, smile, laugh, get goosebumps. So what DO we write in these “stories”?
IMAGINES
Imagines are one-line or one-paragraph accounts of a certain event a fan attended or experienced with her favourite member of the band. These are really cute stuff, and if imagined properly, can give incredible feels. The events vary from a lazy day at home to a date on Eiffel Tower, from lunch at a beautiful restaurant to a bullying incident.
Imagines can be written or can be things you imagine by looking at pictures. Also, outfit imagines. You put together a bunch of things like earrings, dresses, hairstyles, eye make-up and add a theme to the combination, and a fan has to imagine that event in that get-up.
FAN FICTION
These are stories, sometimes even complete book series, that revolve around one or more female characters and our boys. Directioners swear by Wattpad, which is the site for romantic and thrilling fan fiction.
As for themes and content, love, marriage, children, break-up, sob story, high school sweethearts — been there, done that. Directioners and authors of fanfic have explored all these topics and more.
1D fanfic usually revolves around one of the members. So, a Louis girl will usually write fan fiction about Louis Tomlinson — the swagmaster she fell for. Some stories also have a triangle. For example, Liam, Niall and a female fan. But our favourite fanfic is that which shows a side of the boys we can never imagine — a dark side. Stories about a high school girl who gets kidnapped by Harry but ends up falling for him are the best we’ve read. To get you started, here are a few fanfic that we have read and loved.
He’s No Good: Seventeen-year-old Zoe Fray has just moved to Bradford when she meets Zayn Malik, a guy from her neighbourhood who’s got the looks of a Calvin Klein model, and an arrogant yet alluring bad boy attitude. For some reason Zoe quickly catches Zayn’s eye, and when he starts using his irresistible charm and his cheeky smirks on her, Zoe’s new friends tells her to stay away from him, saying he has got a bad reputation which includes drugs, crime and girls. Can Zoe put up with Zayn’s darker side and trust him, or is he really nothing but trouble?
Redemption: “So... I belong with you?” I asked quietly, waiting for him to confirm my thoughts. But a small smile spread over his flawless face and he said, “No. You belong to me.”
Fighting Payne: Drew Kelsoe is fighting to stay alive. With the uncle she lives with gambling all her hard-earned money away, Kelsoe turns to street-fighting to keep herself and her little brother alive. Almost every night, she dismisses her conscience and beats the masked people she is against. What will happen when she is paid to fight a boy nicknamed “Payne”? Read to find out.
The Challenge: Melanie Minor, even though she’s only 19, has spent all her life caring about those around her. She volunteers, donates and helps out whenever she can, but the one thing she doesn’t think about is herself. Louis Tomlinson is funny, easy-going and has let his stardom get to his head; so what happens when their worlds collide? After his sudden break-up with model Eleanor Calder, he’s single again and looking for something, a challenge — and that’s just what Melanie is. What happens when a simple bet from his friends to take the challenge backfires and Louis finds out there’s more to Melanie than he thought?
