WINNING A CONTEST WHILE HE WAS IN COLLEGE GAVE DJ SUKETU HIS FIRST BREAK IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY Published 15.02.09, 12:00 AM

Music has always been my passion, and I’ve been clued in to the world music scene for a very long time now. It all started while I was studying in H.R. College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai and began playing at parties for friends. One thing led to another and before I knew it, I had won a competition for DJs and bagged a contract with a leading music company in 1999. That was a major turning point in my life.

My parents have always been very supportive of my profession, though they did insist that I complete my education. So I got myself an MBA degree before taking up music full time. I’ve trained under some of the best DJs in the world, which helped me understand music better.

In 2003, the remix of the song Pyar Zindagi Hai in my debut album, 440 Volts, got me public recognition. But what really got my career going was the remix of the song Bin Tere Sanam from the album War of the DJs Vol 2 in 2004. This was another major turning point in my life. I was pleasantly surprised when the number became a hit, and since then there has been no looking back.

Bin Tere Sanam also got me noticed in Bollywood and helped me bag my first remixed soundtrack, Woh Lamhe, in the film Zeher. Since then, I’ve also remixed soundtracks for other films including Omkara, Kismat Konnection, Roadside Romeo and the more recent Raaz 2 — The Mystery Continues. I have also done some background scores.

Having made my name, it’s been a steady progress. Today I have my own recording studio, and other than DJ-ing, I also create jingles for radio and for television advertisements.

Currently, I’m mixing songs for a couple of films including Aa Dekhe Zara and this year I hope to compose original soundtracks for some films.
