To mark the occasion, students were invited to the Consulate of Germany in Alipore on August 14. Two Jadavpur University professors of the engineering department — Amitava Gupta, a DAAD research ambassador, and Ranjan Ganguly, an Alexander van Humboldt fellow — also attended the event.

“The well-being of each individual is of utmost priority for Germany right now. Heirarchy is in the background with the focus being on human rights,” said the consul general, who stressed the need for punctuality. “And rules are meant to be followed!” he added.

The two-hour long session had Chuan Guo, language teacher at Goethe Institut, testing the grasp of German language of the new students.

The evening ended with a short, fun quiz on the country, with the winners taking home charging adapters, vouchers to any cultural event of choice and a travel book on Germany. The students were also handed out a survival guide leaflet prepared by German students, answering queries regarding accommodation, studies, travel, bank accounts, food and more. The evening ended with the screening of a short film on the country along with high-tea.
