Let me start with a question. What connects the following dates: October 5, September 11, the last Friday in October, September 10, the Tuesday in the first complete week in May? Yes, you guessed right; they are all celebrated as Teachers’ Day in different countries. This is the day on which you fondly remember your math teacher who gave you a tough time in Class 8 or your geography teacher who cut your marks for spelling Uruguay incorrectly. What better occasion to say ‘Thank you’ to all those gurus than on the eve of India’s Teachers’ Day. Incidentally, the Sanskrit word guru comes from two words, ‘gu’, meaning darkness, and ‘ru’, meaning one who removes the darkness.
