The prolific crime writer Maria Cole is perfectly happy to be a target for book thieves; her books are among those most read in prison. They gave John Betjeman poems a jacket with a tattooed old man in his underwear, and the faces of Tudors were replaced with monkey heads. The books are now the most valuable in the library’s collection.
