How many times have you robbed a book from a library? At school? At the local club or the British Council? This columnist is guilty, as charged. The prolific crime writer Maria Cole is perfectly happy to be a target for book thieves; her books are among those most read in prison. Even though you do not literally have to flex your muscles to be a pustak pirate, librarians of Liverpool Central Library have stopped restocking The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding by Arnold Schwarzenegger because it was stolen so often. I am visiting the Calcutta Book fair next week, but promise…old habits die hard.

In 1960s, the playwright Joe Orton and his lover, Kenneth Halliwell were jailed for defacing covers of the books they robbed from the Islington local library. They gave John Betjeman poems a jacket with a tattooed old man in his underwear, and the faces of Tudors were replaced with monkey heads. The books are now the most valuable in the library’s collection.
