It was the first spaceflight to successfully send animals to space and bring them back alive. This paved the way for Yuri Gagarin’s pathbreaking spaceflight less than eight months later. Meanwhile, Sunita Williams has just entered her second month on the International Space Station, and will assume command of Expedition 33, next month.
