Once upon a time, all of us wondered what would goddess Durga come to Earth on: a horse, an elephant, a boat or a palanquin? This year she is coming on an elephant. But for many of us today she comes on a television screen. The attractions in these modern times are endless sales, Puja dhamakas and buffets, pandal competitions and vacations. In another few days Calcutta, like many other cities, will be dressed like a bride to welcome the goddess. Mahalaya tomorrow, which is marked by prayers to forefathers, listening to the chants from Mahishasur Mardini and Chandipath on the radio, would kickstart the festivities. What are your plans for the Pujas?
