Kavi Pradeep’s (born Ramachandra Narayani Dwivedi) enduring song Aye mere watan ke logon turned 50 this year. The song was born out of despair and sadness following the casualties of the war of 1962. Story has it that completely despondent, Pradeep was walking along Mahim beach in Mumbai when the words suddenly came to him. He borrowed a pen from a fellow walker, ripped out the foil from his cigarette packet and penned the first stanza of the immortal song. Put to music by C. Ramachandra, this tribute, to the soldiers who died defending our country in the Sino-Indian war, was famously sung by Lata Mangeshkar on 26 January 1963, at the Ramlila Maidan.
